Windsor Holds Freight of Unseen Wonders at the Windsor Art Center
MELANIE SAVELLI
Sick and tired of visiting museums that cycle through the same types of paintings? Follow the train tracks to the old Windsor Freight House to discover original works at Windsor Art Center.
Windsor Art Center is a modern non-profit that fosters visual and performance art. This up and coming organization features artists, musicians, actors and artisans to bring the excitement of the arts to the surrounding community. Windsor Art Center opens its doors to the public on Thursdays 6:00pm-8:00pm, Saturdays 10:00am-4:00pm, and Sundays 11:00am-4:00pm.
The Center began in 2007 when a group of local citizens who were interested in securing a greater presence for the arts in the town came together to plan and present the works of local artists. The Windsor Art Center is run entirely by volunteers who have dedicated themselves to this cause and are always looking for more support.
Windsor Art Center appeals to all interests and age groups. From poetry slams and art displays to musical performances and children’s vacation programs, all forms of art are appreciated.
Not only does the Center supply a place to become immersed in the artistic talent of others, it provides learning opportunities to enhance personal artistic abilities. Various workshops are offered to teach the community about creating collages, paintings, and printmaking. This is yet another way that Windsor Art Center enriches the artistic culture of the community.
Types of Events
A current series that Windsor Art Center hosts is Poetry on the Line. This is a four-part program that features eight Connecticut poets reading from their own published works. Poetry on the Line readings are one hour in length followed by Tea at Three with book signings and discussion. Not only is this a great way to experience poetry, it allows the infrequent opportunity to chat with the author.
Windsor Art Center also attracts talent that is recognized outside of the United States. For example, guitarist Scott Sanchez, known for his musical and performances on the guitar played a set at the Center in November 2009. Referring to his British debut, Classical Guitar Magazine (London, England) said, "Sanchez drew the audience into his playing with his excellent performance… a performance which at times was introspective and at others extrovert. Sanchez made light work of playing what at times looked like some fearsomely difficult passages." This talent was made available to Connecticut residents thanks to the Windsor Art Center.
How to Get Involved
The Windsor Art Center has one large open space and two smaller galleries for exhibitions. The curatorial committee is currently developing themes for 2011.
The committee welcomes inquiries about performances at the Center. Interested artists should send a query via e-mail with a link to a web site, or other space that displays the artist’s work. Volunteers are always needed to run the events. More information on showing work or volunteering at the Center can be obtained through the Windsor Art Center website www.windsorartcenter.org, or via e-mail at info@windsorartcenter.org. Windsor
Art Center exposes the surrounding communities to the powerful works of visual and performance art. Just remember to follow the tracks to discover the artist within.
