iPhone exhibition of ‘phoney-art ’ You knew your iPhone could send emails, and take pictures, and allowed you to play games and even sometimes use it as a phone, but did you know that you could create works of art on it too? Yeah! They have an “app” for that! The Windsor Art Center at the Freight House is presently exhibiting artwork created solely on 14 different artists’ palm-held iPhones. From Europe , Vermont, and Colorado, these artists have taken to creating their inspirations using applications like ‘Brushes” and “ArtStudio” to depict avant garde as well as beautiful, colorful scenes of people, places and things. The applications allow you to choose different size brushes, layer your colors , shade and detail portions of your ‘painting.’ Curator and Art Center board member Sam Hinckley’s story of how this exhibit came to be is pretty normal. “I had happened to read in Art News magazine last year that an artist named David Hogney was using his Iphone as his sketchbook. He had found a couple apps on there that were pretty useful for sketches and painting. He would e-mail them to his friends as gifts. That was intriguing,” said Hinckley. “I was just amazed at what they were able to do on IPhone.” Hinckley says that the Windsor Art Center got the best artists they could find in the iPhone genre, and the ‘paintings’ came. Some came on canvas, some were printed and matted, some were framed, and a few came digitally. Hinckley says this may be a new genre, but he’s not sure. “I don’t know how it’s going to be received yet,” he said. “We did sell a number of things in the opening reception. People seem to be treating it seriously.” Hinckley says that on opening night the reactions were varied, and he found that some of the older patrons needed to be told what an iPhone was. “I think a lot of them don’t know really what to expect.” The pieces go from classic-traditional subject matter to funky and a little freakish. The exhibit runs through August 7. The Art Center is located at 40 Mechanic Street, and you can find more information at www.windsorartcenter.org.
